Alex Finch Monster Hunter The Monster Files Book 1 eBook Cate Dean

This book got 2 stars because this author has potential. The book itself needs rewrites with strong attention to details. For instance, we are told A!ex is a junior who skipped 3 grades because she is so smart. Yet a few chapters later she is 16 and driving. Now about the car. A big tado is made about the bike she takes to school, ya know, the one she saved a year for and coddles. Then when it is no longer convenient to be biking places she suddenly has a little MG convertable to drive. Okay????
Another example of poor story telling is when a hole group purposely goes monster hunting but no one brings a weapon???. And don't forget how after said monster hunting trip everyone, including her very concerned Dad, drive off and leave her in a dark parking lot before she even gets into her topless MG(convenient set up for a chase scene). These are just a few of the ridiculous scenarios that make this book hard to read and in need of some major rewrites.

Alex Finch Monster Hunter The Monster Files Book 1 eBook Cate Dean Reviews

I enjoyed this book on several levels. It was really well written, unlike many free books in the kindle store. It was also very unique compared to other monster books in the fact that the heroine in this book isn't magical nor does she have supernatural powers.

Alex is just an ordinary tomboy who finds herself in a very extraordinary situation. She knows that monsters do exist and they live right underneath her town. Her friends, her dad, and her high school crush try to save the town from things that go bump in the night.

This book doesn't disappoint in the fast paced action that keeps you turning the pages. I highly recommend it and the price is unbeatable.
I really liked this book. It had all the earmarks of a good action fantasy. There was mystery and danger, fast-paced action as well as some sweet moments. The monsters were actually monsters, not just misunderstood. And while the good guys could be decent as humans, once they changed they were dangerous.

The description of “The Devil” type of monster was both funny and scary. And I liked how Alex’s Dad was both protective of his daughter, and willing to get in the thick of things. A lot of paranormal and urban fantasy books seem to have the kids do everything while the parents aren’t around much, or are left in the dark. Alex’s relationship with her Dad was a nice change to all that.

There is an element of romance to the book, but nothing happens past a few kisses. I did want to smack Sam a few times, especially at the end of the book. But I could also see why he was doing what he did. Hopefully he will be in the next book, I did quite like him as a character.

I also really liked Misty, she was funny and smart. Not just the stereotypical cheerleader she was at first made out to be.

I’ll be picking up book 2 in this series, and if you haven’t read this book yet I suggest you do so.

(cross-posted to my blog)
"The monster’s out of the closet, and we have to shove it back in and lock the door."

All because of a lost backpack...

Alex just wanted to find her backpack with all her project notes inside. If it hadn’t been for her ditzy project partner, Misty, losing them, they wouldn’t have been attacked by a monster! Now Alex is thrown into a world she never knew existed until it almost literally bites her in the ass. And to top it off, her crush Sam maybe or may not be involved in all this craziness, too.

Alex was very sassy and relatable and I totally loved her for that! I also really liked Alex’s reaction towards finding out about the supernatural world—it was very realistic! Initially, Alex wants zero involvement in all this, and I totally get it. However, certain things happen that force Alex to rethink things and she reluctantly goes out to stop the monster before it hurts innocent people in town.

And Alex’s dad... he was the best! In a lot of YA books the parents are typically either dead or not around. In this book, however, I really loved how he involved himself in his daughter’s life and how he took care of these crazy teens fighting this crazy monster. I just loved seeing an adult around for a change—it was really nice!

Another character I loved Misty! At first she was presented as an airhead of a cheerleader, but there was so much more to her and I really appreciated that. I was so pleasantly surprised by Misty and so glad she wasn’t your cliche, stereotypical mean girl/cheerleader. I just loved seeing how Alex became more accepting of Misty as a friend, something she never thought possible.

[Misty] flashed me one of her brilliant smiles. “Being friends with you is never boring.”
“Friends?” I think my voice may have squeaked.
“You think I’m spending time with you, and introducing you to my friends because we’re working on a stupid project together?”

In this book we focused on two different monsters, but there were a couple of other monsters mentioned throughout the book that has made me very excited to continue read the series. A particular one that caught my attention the Fenris Wolf! As in from Norse mythology! You know how much I love my mythology, so I was super excited to see this!

The one thing I wasn’t the biggest fan of in this book was the fact that there were so many questions raised, and so few of them answered. Like, almost none. Look, I understand that this is the first book in the series, but still. I feel like we should’ve gotten at least some answers. I mean there are some things implied, but never actually confirmed. I don’t know, I guess I’m just annoyed by it.

But overall, I really liked this book! I thought the world was really interesting and I am hoping to see more variety of monsters in future books! I was actually expecting something more along the lines of Supernatural when it came to the monster hunting aspect of it, but it really wasn’t like that at all. It’s definitely not a bad thing though because it was still a really enjoyable read!
